The Crazy Creek Fire started July 22 from lightning about 16 miles north of Paulina, Oregon. The incident is being managed by Central Oregon Type 3 Team, under the command of James Purswell / Justin Ritschard (Trainee). Command was transferred from Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5 to California Incident Management Team 1 on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, and then to the Central Oregon Type 3 Team at 6 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Planned Actions

Fire Suppression Repair will continue throughout the Fire Incident Area. Firefighters remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any changes.  

Projected Incident Activity

Slight chance of thunderstorms early morning and afternoon. Fire activity will be limited to isolated
interior pockets. With an increase in temperatures interior smoldering, creeping and isolated pockets of open flame are expected. 

Remarks

Both the Crook and Wheeler County Sheriff’s Departments have reduced evacuation statuses in some areas. However, a Level 3 “Go” evacuation order remains in effect for areas within the closure boundaries, while areas approximately 1/2 mile around the perimeter of the closure are in Level 2 “Be Set” status. For the most current evacuation information, please visit the Crook County Facebook and webpage and the Wheeler County Facebook page.

The Ochoco National Forest has implemented a revised forest closure for the eastern half of the Paulina Ranger District, effective Aug. 28. The Bureau of Land Management also revised its temporary closure for public lands in Crook and Grant Counties.
